At 9:30, TCM is showing the long lost Sherlock Holmes (1916). The film was assumed lost forever, until a negative was discovered in France in 2014. It was scheduled to be shown at a couple of film festivals, but I did not know that TCM would get access to it.

Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a Sherlock Holmes play in the 1890s (he wanted to build a new home, Undershaw), but the great English actors of the time wanted to rewrite the play for their own particular talents (one wanted to play both Holmes and Moriarty!). Eventually the play got passed to American playwright/actor/director William Gillette. Doyle insisted on only one thing: there was to be no love interest in Sherlock Holmes. Theatrical producer and go-between Charles Frohman uttered a Victorian rendition of "Trust me!" Gillette, who then read the entire Holmes collection for the first time, started outlining the piece in San Francisco while still touring in another play. On one occasion, after they had exchanged numerous telegrams about the play, Gillette telegraphed Conan Doyle: "May I marry Holmes?" Doyle responded: "You may marry him, or murder or do what you like with him."

Gillette ended up playing Holmes more that 1300 times between 1899 and 1932. The 1916 film is the only record of Gillette on film in any role. The play was also filmed in 1922, starring John Barrymore, and as a 1981 episode of the HBO series Standing Room Only, starring Frank Langella.
