Jason Isbell has gotten all kinds of well-deserved accolades for his solo career. But he also wrote some of the absolute best DBT songs back when he was with them.

(4,138 posts)I probably like more of Cooley's songs overall, but he wrote a lot more, and has a fair number of duds. Like you say, all of Isbell's are great, and I'd say he wrote the two best songs (John Henry, and Goddamn Lonely Love) on their best album.
(And Patterson Hood is way less consistent than either, but has written a lot of great songs too)

(33,643 posts)And I'm in total agreement ... They've all three written tons of great tracks, but ALL of Jason's were so friggin' solid. Granted there's like only 10, compared to Patterson and Mike who've done dozens ... heck 'Never Gonna Change' might be the 'worst' of the lot, and him the Unit still tear that one up live ... it's a much better live song in fact ...
GDLL is my favorite Isbell tune, probably always will be ... first DBT or Jason song I ever heard, in fact. Lyrics are so friggin' profound ... and then the melody, and the playing ... it's all so freaking perfect ...
