(4,313 posts)Depending on how you define "popular", the first rap song could be either "Rapper's Delight" or "King Tim III (Personality Jock)". Both songs were influential and groundbreaking in the history of hip hop music.

A year after the Sugarhill Gang released Rapper's Delight in 1979, Blondie recorded Rapture, the first major hip-hop hit to use original music rather than sampling other artists' beats. Released on Blondie's Autoamerican album in late 1980, the single, co-written by Debbie Harry and Chris Stein, reached No.
So, in a way, Rapture was the first - original - rap song
