They were better musicians than lip sinkers. To be fair, It would be difficult to duplicate that phasing in a live performance.

do this one live. There is a video of Steve singing it live on a contemporary German or French program somewhere on YouTube but the band is miming to the background track. I'm guessing Steve didn't like miming. Makes sense, seeing as he was probably the greatest white soul singer of all time.
