Which albums have you owned the most? For yourself or gifts - hell I bought some records 10 tmes

Last edited Mon Mar 12, 2018, 02:42 PM - Edit history (1)

In the DU Lounge today Miles Archer posted a thread celebrating 50th Anniversary of the release CSN&Y's Deja Vu -

&list=PL6A6129665C3EAA1D

I commented that that record was a "Trifecta" meaning that I purchased it in at least 3 formats. I believe that I purchased Deja Vu at least 5 times - In 8-track, Vinyl and CD.

I know that I had to keep buying "You're not Alone" by Roy Buchannan in the 70s and 80s because it was the most "stolen during parties" record I've ever owned.

Also on the list is the classic Allman Brothers' "Live at the Fillmore"

Was given PF as a gift as a kid, and then as an adult, I didn't have a record player, but I thought it would be funny to have it in my collection. Brings back memories.

At one point, my record/CD collection weighed more than my bedroom or living room set.

I had to pay extra when I made a Permanent Change of Station (PCS in military jargon) move from NY to Japan- but only 'cause the wife wouldn't let me sell the couch and a bookcase.

Fell in love with it on my first listening. My sister gave me my first copy, on vinyl, when we were stationed in Germany (Air Force - I was at Sembach, she was stationed at Bitburg). Found and bought a German version in a local store. This was narrated by Curd Jürgens playing the artilleryman (vs. Richard Burton for the English version). Bought a 'High-speed mastered' version on vinyl, and then a CD version. I transferred it at least once to 10" open-reel tape, and recorded it on several sets of cassettes. Justin Hayward's (from the Moody Blues) soaring vocals and the orchestral score really made this a classic.

(If you've never heard it, it stays much closer to the original book than the Orson Welles radio version.)

One track from the album:

I love E.C. Hell I even bought Money and Cigarettes twice and that record kinda sucked...

I thought that Journeyman and Behind the Sun were ignored and deserve more shine from Clapton fans - Journeyman is pretty respected now, but behind the sun is just clumped in with "80s Clapton" records...

Documentary about Eric's life? It's incredible!

Both "Behind the Sun" and "Journeyman" (and a few others) were recorded during his almost deadly bout with alcohol.....he says in the docu "I can hear how drunk I was on those albums"....I couldn't!

That being said, have no idea when it'll hit other media sources. It only ran a month on Showtime. It'll be released again on Showtime within the year, I'm sure......

Wouldn't surprise me if it gets nominated for awards, the editing itself is phenomenal! It was produced by Lili Zanuck (Driving Miss Daisy, Cocoon, Mulholland Falls, etc.) and is quite award worthy imo.....

If I see it's available elsewhere I'll post here on du.....

Big props for the Parliament choice.

For my 13th birthday, my cool Uncle (Mom's youngest Brother) gave me a Goody's Gift Certificate.

I bought Queen "News of the World" which was brand new and Parliament "Mothership Connection"

I have never been without a copy of either record in the 40+ years since.

NOTW has my all time favorite Queens song on it - A tune that I feel is criminally under played and forgotten. I mean cripes man, how about we skip the next iteration of "Fat Bottomed Girls and instead play this:

...has always been in my collection as well. I couldn't agree with you more; people spend way too much time listening to "We Will Rock You", "We Are The Champions" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" instead of gems like "It's Late" (the way the band kicks it into overdrive at the end of the song still makes me get up and move around, even all these years later), "The Prophet's Song" (a virtual masterpiece) and "White Man" (another stellar performance). And nothing kicks ass like track #3 on NOTW, "Sheer Heart Attack".

You've got great taste in music, my friend...

At the time I felt like Queen was just showing the punks what punk should sound like... like - "Hey Strummer, learn to play that guitar why doncha?"

Now, to be fair, Clash did learn to play - Compare "White Riot" with "Clampdown" and you can really tell, not that any of them had the chops that Queen had... Every member of Queen was an amazing musician

...nobody - and I mean NOBODY - did it better than Bad Brains. Matter o' fact, right now I'm kicking my own ass for not including "I Against I" and "Quickness" on my original list. Listen to the most blistering 90 seconds of punk ever produced:

Punk aside though, once again you're right on point; anyone would be hard-pressed to find a more virtuosic group of musicians than Queen, especially for the "rock" genre.

Rest in peace, Freddie...

Some where my dads as well. I know of a lot where I had the album and the CD. I am not sure if I ever had both the album and the cassette. A few where I had the cassette and the CD.

I think maybe I had a cassette of Who's Next so I had three versions of that album. Favorite single album by my favorite band (I do like Quadrophenia better for a double album, but I never had a cassette of it).

Not to disrespect the Eagles - HC is an all time great record, but it juuuuusssssttt misses

And although Joshua Tree was genre changing in the 80s - it just hasn't retained it's value in the last 30 years to me

But damn - Revolver, Exile, Document and Live Bullet should be included on any desert island list.
