1. A then-unknown Santana opened for the Airplane

at a free concert in Central Park, about 2 weeks before Woodstock. I was blown away and HAD to get the album as soon as it was released a few weeks later.

2. In NY, must have been a blast. I almost saw Hendrix in Balto

in 1968 but dad said we were too young to go, 3 hr drive. He was right..

3. A twenty-year-old Michael Shrieve banging on the tubs.

Such fire!

4. He was tripping his ass off during that set.

He was interviewed several years ago, and he said that the performance schedule changed a few times, and they were told they would be on much later, so he dropped a hit of acid.

Then they told them to go on stage.

He said that his guitar neck was like a writhing snake, and he's never been really sure how he got through it. (My guess is that it was raw, pure talent.)

5. I have watched this performance *hundreds* of times

... thanks to the YouTube machine. Santana has always been among my favorites. I was just about three years too young to fully appreciate Woodstock at the time, but this music has brought immeasurable pleasure to my life.
