Gaetano Alberto "Guy" Lombardo (June 19, 1902 – November 5, 1977) was a Canadian-American bandleader, violinist, and hydroplane racer.

Lombardo formed the Royal Canadians in 1924 with his brothers Carmen, Lebert and Victor, and other musicians from his hometown. They billed themselves as creating "the sweetest music this side of Heaven." The Lombardos are believed to have sold between 100 and 300 million records during their lifetimes, many featuring the band's lead singer from 1940 onward, Kenny Gardner.

Hydroplane racing

Lombardo was also an important figure in Step Boat speedboat racing, winning the Gold Cup in 1946 in his record-breaking speedboat, Tempo VI, designed and built by John L. Hacker. He then went on to win the Ford Memorial competition in 1948 and the President's Cup and the Silver Cup in 1952. From 1946 to 1949, Lombardo was the reigning U.S. national champion. Before his retirement from the sport in the late 1950s, he had won every trophy in the field. In 1959 Lombardo was attempting a run on the absolute water speed record with the jet engine-powered Tempo Alcoa when it was destroyed on a radio-controlled test run doing over 250 miles per hour (400 km/h). After the destruction of the Tempo Alcoa, Lombardo retired from hydroplane racing. In 2002 he was inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame for his accomplishments.

I'll look for a video of them.

Charted at #2 in 1938. Originally composed as a Yiddish song for a Yiddish musical in 1932, it was re-written with english lyrics. Featured in the movie, "Love, Honor and Behave" starring Priscilla Lane and Wayne Morris.

Also #1 for the Andrews Sisters (their first hit), #7 for Jerry Blaine and His Streamline Rhythm, #15 for Kate Smith, #3 for Russ Morgan, all in 1938, and #69 for Louis Prima and Keely Smith in July 1959.

Written by Sammy Cahn, Saul Chaplin, Jacob Jacobs and Sholom Seconda.

Written for an early ‘30s Yiddish musical comedy, the tune became a sensation when an up-and-coming girl trio named Andrews recorded it with new English lyrics by Sammy Cahn & Saul Chaplin. The Lombardo version also sold well.

CD audio, originally issued on 78rpm: Victor 25739 - Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen (Cahn-Chaplin-Jacobs-Secunda) by Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians, vocal by male trio, recorded in NYC December 15, 1937

The biggest selling version, I gather:

Forever on CBS, broadcast from the Waldorf Astoria. Then one year Dick Clark started a rival rock and roll show on ABC.
