1. This really takes me back.

I was going to summer classes at the local Jr. College, and my classes were all downtown. I used to hear this frequently while in transit, waiting at the bus stop or on the bus. It was my theme song for the summer, I'd never spent so much time downtown before.

2. The "city" I lived in when this tune came out was just North of San Antonio, Schertz.

And I loved the song as well as the Loving Spoonful. The highest buildings were a few two story prairie style homes.population was less than 2,000.
And the next Summer I was living in Dallas, walking the downtown streets. And downtown Dallas in Summer is really hot. The high rises with the reflective windows had just come into vogue. They'd damn near broil you.
And my bandana wearing long haired skinny hippy ass'd be whistling," Summer in the City" like I didn't have a care in the world.
