as Latinx.

I remember how surprised I was to find out they were Swedish.

Still, “Fernando” makes good use of their Latin stylings.

At the time this song was being heard worldwide I was in Dublin and remarked to an American friend how ABBA reminded me of the Mommas and the Poppas. They weren’t as edgy as what we liked about the current rock’n’roll music of the time , but likeable nevertheless. An Irish friend said it was a rebel song, like those so popular in Ireland. It was about the struggle against a strong foreign power trying to take their land. Some years later I learned about the San Patricio’s Brigade, made up of mostly Irish immigrants, along with German, French, Italian, Scots, Polish, Swiss, and escaped slaves that appreciated their freedom in America but also recognized the need to support the rights of the native Mexicans. Bravery, integrity, humanity, and honor against the odds! Songs about this era were also written later- by The Chieftains ( with Liam Neeson narration and guest Ry Cooder), Black 47, Niamh Pardons, Street Dogs and others. They all celebrate the courage of those willing to rise up against tyranny.
