R.I.P. Mr. Satan. (Sterling Magee - Just found out he died from COVID last September)
He was the guitar/vocals part of the blues duo Satan and Adam (Sterling Magee and Adam Gussow). I got to see them just as they were starting to get noticed, before they put out their first album, at a little bar in Greenwich Village (Kelly's Village West on Bedford Street). The man was a musical genius who played with the likes of James Brown, King Curtis, Joey Dee and the Starliters, and a host of others.
Had a hard life with some bad times, but he was truly one of the best musicians I've had the honor to have seen live. They put on one heck of an energetic show.
The duo was also very unlikely. Mr. Satan was playing on 125th Street in Harlem, and this white Jewish kid from Columbia University saw him and asked if he could play along. Magee pointed to a spot on the sidewalk next to him and said, "That's your spot." They did a great job on the blues for the next several years, and developed a lasting friendship. Gussow went down to Gulfport and delivered a heartfelt eulogy.
There's a documentary on them - 'Satan and Adam' - that was uses clips from a 20-year span of their lives.
