I liked the drumming on "Get Your Ya-Ya's Out". He kept the Stones on beat.

(54,770 posts)1. That's a good choice. Not sure about "defines him," but Get Off My Cloud
is one of my favorite Stones song especially when young and his drumming is perfect.
I cant imagine most of their songs without Watts, but theyd still sell out large venues. They are a show/production now.

But I always thought he was the unsung hero of Cant You Hear Me Knocking. So stylish and jazzy:
Heres a great write-up on that:
Charlies work in CYHMK is an incredible showcase of at least half a dozen different techniques, approaches, rhythms, and beats. His rhythmic sensitivity is at an all-time high here, and as noted in other songs in this list, his syncopated fluency throughout is the glue that holds this seven-plus-minute ecstatic ramble of a song from collapsing. Hes probably not the instrument youre most focused on during this song, but put on some headphones and check out the jazz shuffle he mixes into the bridge during both Bobby Keyss sax and Mick Taylors guitar solos. Charlie even figures out how to make it all swing towards the end, hitting the cymbals with a bit of a Latin flair.

Watts did that. Low key dude, but his drumming spoke for himself.

Last night, eventually we settled on Rip This Joint as Charlie's high point
I was arguing Heartbreaker or Satisfaction but Bill wore me down and I had to agree with him
