(65,013 posts)When they were recording "Fooled Around & Fell In Love", Elvin was very unhappy with his vocal part.
Somebody suggested that since Mickey Thomas was in another studio (with Starship, I think), they should ask him to come over, sing it, & see if it helped Elvin get ideas for the part.
Mickey agreed, came over, sang through it once. Elvin said "That did it. I've got a solid idea now. You sing it on the record!"
That's how that hit ended up with Mickey singing the lead.

(13,864 posts)I was amazed to learn he got got a full ride to The University of Chicago ( top 10 ranking in the US!) to study physics. He's a really smart dude that wears coveralls when he performs. Just goes to show you can't judge a book by its cover.

(65,013 posts)His playing is very melodic. He's a little too stuck in pentatonics for me, but not so on that hit.
Mostly because the çhords are mostly obvious major chords. Had to change his normal thinking for that.
(BTW: When I mention obvious major, that's as opposed to blues changes where the chords can be actual major chords, but the I, IV, V changes create a minor "feel". When a blues song actually is played with minor chords, it sounds jazzier.)
