The Faces are cool and all and the Stones are the Stones, but Ronnie's solo work deserves way way more love
Whether it's doing Dylan BETTER than Bob himself:
Or writing songs that Keith and Mick kick themselves for not coming up with themselves:
All Ronnie has ever been is outstanding and he gets passed over and ignored because the damn singers get all the pub?
Bullshit, Ronnie is a stud, and I saw his "Gimme Some Neck" tour he kills it live as well.
Why doesn't he get more respect? It mystifies me:

(33,643 posts)Always dug the funky timing on this song ... makes it tricky to play along to ...
Son Volt, led by Jay Farrar, is one of the offshoot bands from the seminal Alt-Country early 1990's act Uncle Tupelo ... the other offshoot is Wilco, led by Jeff Tweedy ... Trace is the first Son Volt effort and it's top to bottom awesome. This is the only cover, and it closes the record fabulously.

(33,643 posts)I think having to fill Mick Taylor's shoes in the Stones (and lets be real, guitar playing-wise, Mick was ... more advanced, shall we say?) has unfairly led to Ronnie being a bit under-valued historically. Also, he's kinda goofy ...

(13,189 posts)Too technical to be a perfect fit in the Stones.
Ronnie and Keith are both all about the groove, 6-8 note fills between the verses and a quick in and out solo at the bridge.
It's a rock and roll formula that can't be denied, obviously.
Mick Taylor seemed a better fit in LP length jams (like John Mayall's Bluesbreakers did) and the Stones were all about 45 RPM single length rockers.

(33,643 posts)Save for perhaps a brief period in the 1980's ... and I think that particular 'timing' was unfortunate for Wood ... not financially, of course, but in terms of respect.
He was kinda universally regarded as a 'downgrade' in the talent level because at the time so many people were all about 'technical skill' ... you had the prog rockers (Steve Howe, Robert Fripp, etc) really coming up right around that time, plus guitar gods like Page, Clapton, Blackmore, Iommi ... really hitting their stride. The studly guitar solo was like KING ... right then ...
Had Wood replaced Jones directly, or had he done so circa 'Some Girls' I think he'd have ended up being looked upon a bit more fondly, that's all I'm sayin'

(11,802 posts)And here I thought we was kindred souls!
I'm of the very strong opinion that, barring Let It Bleed & Beggars Banquet, the Mick Taylor era stuff is thee gold standard Rolling Stones Records. Any arguments against this very strong opinion can be kept to oneself!

(33,643 posts)I'd kill to write just one song with lyrics this good ... just one time in my life ... well, not a person, of course ...

(11,802 posts)As great as those tracks are, and they are, my man Rod Stewart bumps it up to awesome!
But speaking of the Wood, you heard this? Think you'll dig it if'n ya ain't.

(11,802 posts)Just glad to return the favor for a change! Lots of rock in instrumentals on it. Good record.

(11,802 posts)At that time Ron had thee sickest guitar tone! Evidenced by my current favorite Faces tune....
And for the record, I do agree that Ron n Keith are prolly a better fit.....

(33,643 posts)determining just what f***ing instrument anyone is playing ... I mean, for example just what guitar is that Ronnie is playing? It looks LP shaped but it's like metallic-looking, and seems to have way too many knobs, some of them in very weird places ... lol ... it's quite frustrating ...
