(4,231 posts)great "stuff". Producer Jimmy Ienner cuts to an "effect" like the band is being heard through a transistor radio on one chorus and then blends an increasing level of the band as in studio. Also a false ending. Great song and must have been a huge amount of fun.

(4,231 posts)leave the subject without this. It has no tricks etc. But this method of recording is a lost art. Recording a performance rather than doing tracks at a time. That is in fact Burt Bacharach conducting the orchestra and playing piano. George Martin producing.

David and Bacharach weren't really into creating this song initially. Turns out to be one of their best. I agree completely about Cilla Black. The edge she gives the lyric makes this song as believable from the heart of anybody. It has a plaintive quality that immediately allows us to identify.
