(65,076 posts)First, let me say I really liked the stuff Santana did with Alex Ligertwood singing. He reminds me of Steve Winwood some.
Anyway, I looked this song up on Wikipedia to see who wrote it. A Canadian guy wrote & recorded it in '81, so this is a cover.
Anyway, the wiki write up classifies its genre as "Yacht Rock"! I had never seen that term before.
Yacht Rock.

(5,174 posts)elevator rock?
civilized rock?
rock for the happy hour suits?
boarding music rock?
I would just call it smooth rock.
Carlos looks great in this video though; probably made in the early 80s wouldn't you say

(65,076 posts)I like the song, and I don't have a yacht! Where's the truth in advertising?

(5,174 posts)That yacht music label makes me want to at least listen to that Santana tune while driving by an oceanfront in my older model car; since I don't have a staffed boat or even a way to get to the ocean for a cheap tropical thrill ride.

(65,076 posts)In that last band I was in (for around 20 years) we had other bands (mostly garage material, or heavy rock) tell us we were too polished. One time, a hacky blues rocker said it and our drummer said "How many gigs you played the last year, and how much did your last gig pay?" I don't recall the exact numbers but our drummer said "we played more than that in the last month and we make 3 times the money. Maybe polish is the reason." (Yeah, that and we were all much better players.)
One metal dude complained we worried about harmonies too much. The guitar played and I went "like Van Halen, The Scorpions, Dokken. Poison...". We went through about 10 heavy bands with prominent backing vocals. He STFU.
