(65,058 posts)Mick Ralph's used Ampeg tube amps. They've got that midrange cut!
You can hear it when he chunks the muted strings during the chorus. You'll hear how those deaden strings are chunky not thumpy. {Sorry for the technical terms, }

(65,058 posts)Musicians, especially guitar players, have their own lingo. Much of it is onomatopoeia. Doing our best to use a word that sounds like what we mean.
Another example: the guitar on this song is "sproingy"

(48,993 posts)a while back - https://www.democraticunderground.com/103475303 - has about 5 minutes analyzing that song, especially the guitar, starting at about 38:35:
Here's a link to a 2001 Vintage Guitar interview with Mick, talking about his gear and recording, though it's partly about the new songs they recorded for their 1999 album Anthology after Paul Rodgers rejoined the band.

(48,993 posts)I was just using Google to try to find some recent info on how Mick Ralphs is doing. He was badly disabled, left partially paralyzed, by a stroke in 2016. The most recent update I could find was on Ian Hunter's website, from July 2021:
https://ianhunter.com/main/hm-223.shtml
I believe Mick has had to live in care facilities most if not all the time since his stroke, but at least he was living someplace where he was happier by last year.
He was such a great guitarist and songwriter.

(65,058 posts)It's a bit ambiguous. He says Marshall cabinets, but doesn't say Marshall amps.
When we saw him first or second year of college he had Ampeg & at least 8 cabinets.
Maybe he used different hardware on & off. But, I know for sure he played Ampeg & it doesn't sound like a Marshall. The low end thump isn't there and on a Marshall, there's no dialing that out completely. The bass knob is intentionally weak on their amps. Never too boomy, never too thin.

(48,993 posts)friend's small party. I saw some other web pages on gear but haven't looked at them very closely. Don't know if the live performances in '74 and '75 that I posted and linked to in replies 9 and 10 here would help.
