It is Kenneth Hahn Park, however it was from a different location in the park than we normally shoot from. We usually go to the very top of the hill and shoot from near the Martin Luther King Memorial. However, this time we shot from a location which is much lower in elevation, only about a hundred feet above La Brea Avenue. It produces a subtle difference in composition.

You might be grumpy but you find and bring us so much beauty.
You are a Generous Grumpy Old Guy.
You pay attention and notice things in the world around us.
From your eye
through your brain
then your camera
to the web
to our eyes
through our brains…
and wherever that takes us.

Here’s where your picture took me this morning:
Even in the darkest times
there is magnificent beauty in this world around us.

When I open my eyes, and my brain, and my heart
I am filled with awe in being a caretaker of our world, our Mother Earth, and all her inhabitants.
As a Jew, I am charged with Tikkun Olam, repairing the world.
Wisdom of our ancestors teaches us that
we are not required to finish the work
but neither are we excused from the work.
We must do whatever we can.

Thank you for taking me on this Beaver Moon journey this morning, Grump Old Guy.
What a restorative gift!
I face this day in gratitude and peaceful calm now, with hope,
ready to deal with whatever comes my way
with attention and intention to make it better.

You have found her…the “her” could be our Mother Earth, just a thought.
All sing now, with feeling.

Dear Thatcrowwoman,

Thank you so much for your kind words. They mean so much to me. It has taken me awhile to respond, because I hardly know where to begin. I am touched that my photo has brought you a little bit of peace and calm to start your day.

If I had to describe my philosophy with regards to photography, it would be this. There is so much beauty in this world, and much of it is right there in front of us. We just have to open our eyes to see it. Many people go about their business everyday and never take note of it. I may have to drive for a few hours, or even a few days, or go without sleep, but the beauty is there to be found.

I try, with my photography, to show people things that they would not normally see. A full moon is one example. A shorebird hunting for its next meal, a meteor shower in the middle of the desert, a herd of wild horses, a solar or lunar eclipse, a wild burro foraging in the desert, a Hawaiian rain forest, a giant sea turtle, a monarch butterfly on a milkweed plant, a spider weaving a web, and the Milky Way stretching across the night sky are all subjects that I’ve tried to capture. I can’t paint, I can’t sing or write music, but I know how to use a camera. That is my instrument.

I know about Tikkun Olam. I tried to instill it in my children, and now that they’re adults I can see it in them. We don’t always get along, but I know they are good people who want to make this world a better place.

Thank you again. I am deeply touched by your kind words.

Also, the world is a better place because Paul McCartney is in it.

Sincerely.
Ross

I know you were in the Kenny Hahn Wilderness area, out there at the end of the grassy field.

Pure magic!

Thank you.

Yes, we were at Kenneth Hahn Park, but no, we weren't at the top at the grassy field. We shot in a different location, which offered a slightly different composition. We parked on Don Lorenzo Drive off La Brea, and hiked up a very short but steep hill, to where the trails start. It couldn't have been more than fifty or a hundred feet high. It was a much shorter hike, but I was glad that I took a walking stick to help me get up the dirt path going up the hillside. I didn't know that shot existed, but some friends of mine found it using Planit!Pro.

There's much to explore in this scene. I always magnify when viewing photos and prefer your wider shot. I recommend viewing this magnificent photo on something larger than a 5 to 6-inch cellphone screen.

Your forced perspective photos are always splendid, Grumpy. This is one of the best I've viewed.

I do enjoy getting these night shots, and I'm glad that someone appreciates the forced perspective. Some people just don't understand why the moon looks so large. They assume it's photoshopped, which of course, it isn't.
