but at least the wind isn't blowing. It's really not hard to take as long as it's still. We have a trade-off in the winter -- if it's clear, it's bone-chilling cold, but as soon as it warms up, it gets cloudy. I think I prefer the cold. Today was really gorgeous. The fog was just close to the water, the rest of town was crystal clear.

A basic rule of thumb is that for every 1,000' increase in altitude, the temperature drops 3.5 degrees F. Although it doesn't get below freezing very often here in North Texas, while flying at altitude even in my small plane the temperature at 10,000' is around 35 degrees colder than at the surface more or less depending on the lapse rate. I see ice clouds fairly close all the time that are pretty amazing. Photography really doesn't do them justice or at least I haven't been able to really capture how incredible they are. The best seem to be the thin whispy ones that do amazing things to the light that passes through.

I have tried I don't know how many times to get a picture of those little crystals and the colors that bounce off of them when the sun shines through, but it's just impossible. If it stays cold like this for a few more days, we'll get that incredible hoar frost all over everything which I just love.
