My new tripod

When my old, cheapo tripod almost fell over with my new camera, I knew it was time for a new one. After a lot of research, I got the MeFOTO RoadTrip Travel Tripod Kit.

I'm really happy with my purchase. I'm no expert on tripods, but this little tripod meets my needs perfectly. It's light enough to lug around town and even in a backpack, and it's sturdy enough for all of my needs.

Here are some photos:

The legs fold up:

It is convertible to a monopod:

Here are some specs:

Material Aluminum alloy
Load Capacity 17.6 lb (8.0 kg)
Maximum Height 61.6" (156.5 cm)
Maximum Height w/o Column Extended 53.1" (130.3 cm)
Minimum Height 15.4" (39.1 cm)
Folded Length 15.4" (39.1 cm)
Center Column Rapid-type, sliding action,
Attaches to leg section to convert to full size monopod
Leg Sections 5
Independent Leg Spread Yes
Leg Lock Type Twist

The ball head glides smoothly and it comes with detachable feet that you can replace with the included spike feet.

If you're interested, there are a number of good video reviews including this one:

Now that I've spent all of my birthday money on my camera, a 50mm lens, tripod, and assorted filters, I'm anxious for the weather to clear up so I can get out more to take photos.

I used the monopod function the other day when I was out shooting in the fog. Great tripod to carry in the car.

I really wanted a Gitzo but I think Mrs GoS would have objected to the price.

It was all I could do to get the 70D, an LED panel, a Rode mic and the tripod. The Gitzo would have been a deal breaker.

The only thing that I'm not keen on is the lack of a ratchet driven center column. But I can live with that.

column. Each to his/her own.

Yeah - there are definitely more expensive tripods but I don't need top of the line.

Hence my desire for the ratchet option.

But I do understand not wanting it. It does introduce a slight unsteadiness sometimes.
