The beach never fails to deliver something new...(edited to add a migrating Monarch)

Last edited Tue Oct 17, 2017, 07:27 PM - Edit history (3)

This morning Snowy and I went for a walk at sunrise.

Around mid-day, I went out to see if I could get a good shot of the sparkle on the ocean from the sun, and was delighted to
find another visitor riding the wild mustard in the wind.

A Common Buckeye (Junonia coenia) from the Brushfoots (Nymphalidae family)

Later in the afternoon I noticed lots and lots of Monarchs are migrating through here. They are tough to shoot because when they land they don't stay put for long. I was lucky to get one shot of this guy.

End of the day captured after coming home from dinner

It seems like you can never get enough pictures of the ocean... like you could just snap away for hours.

Good job and thanks for posting some peaceful moments for us to enjoy.

We were walking back to the house--my back was to the sunrise--and I turned to see all these rays coming down
from the sun through the clouds.

This is an unedited photo. I may play with it a bit to see if I can enhance the rays without making it look retouched.
It was just a beautiful sight.

What beach is it? (If you don't mind saying.)

I've taken a lot of beach photos, but seldom do they convey the beauty of the moment.

My favorite of the beaches I've been to in NC. We live in Chapel Hill so coming to the beach is pretty easy. October is my favorite time of year here, too. Beach faces south, so the sunrise is actually over the ocean in fall, winter, and spring. Emerald Isle is on the southwest part of the Outer Banks and is called the Crystal Coast here.

It's also almost all beach houses--no hotels--and no high-rises. There are a few inexpensive old motels, but not beach front.

most of the South Jersey Beaches. We haven't been able to make it down there nearly enough in the past couple of years. Just a few mostly day trips.

Can't afford to go and stay in-season any more, so the last few times we stayed for more than a couple of days, we did October. Love the lack of crowds. And the somewhat cooler weather.

Here's one of the better shots I got from our day trip to Cape May on September 1st of this year. Had to trek a quite a ways away from the crowds to get to that spot. Put down a blanket about an hour beforehand and waited for sunset. Then, just as it really began, another photographer came and set up right in front of us! Very odd. Had to reposition. I don't like people in my shots. (Unless, you know, I'm taking pix of people!)

I have a crappy point and shoot camera and don't know much about photography. I just enjoy taking photos of things I like and trying to capture a notion of why. Maybe learning, and improving, little by little.

There are some professional photogs who are members of this forum, but most of us are amateurs. For me, it's all about your eye: being able to recognize what makes a good subject or composition. It doesn't take fancy equipment or lenses to capture a great shot.

I have learned a lot hanging out on this forum from members and studying the photos that we all share. It's a very friendly and supportive group. I hope you'll feel free to share more of your shots and participate in the contests each month. We have a lot of fun with them!

before now. I've always just taken pix for myself. Very little sharing. I have a masters in Educational Tech & Design, so I have a little training in visual design. But nothing specific to photography.

A group like this does seem a great way to learn more about the subject in a casual way. I'll try to get more involved. Though, I'm also always trying to spend less time on line, so, must find a balance!

That butterfly stayed on the wild mustard for several minutes while it was blowing in the sea breeze. It was amazing. I had to wait for the breeze
to stop to shoot.

The Monarchs wouldn't stay put for 2 seconds when they landed. It was such a difference.

The Republicans do not seem to care or feel a responsibility to preserve and protect it for future generations. They scare me. I'm 66 and figure if I'M lucky I might have 20 more years. I am really concerned what this beach will look like by then.
