The Anole eggs have hatched & the babies have emerged!

Anoles have been laying eggs in my daisy beds for 7 years now. Today I noticed a teeny tiny anole on my Gerbera Daisies, so I went looking for the rest of the babies. My daisies are surrounded by impatiens.

Anoles lay about a dozen eggs, laying one a day every 10 days.

And now the babies are here!

I found four baby anoles. One was in my recycling bin nook and scooted as soon as it saw me. I didn't get a photo of that one.

But...

This anole has been out of the egg around 2 days. It is about the size of a quarter from head to base of tail. They hatch with tails about twice the size of their bodies.

It is living in the daisy beds.

There are two anoles living in the Sago Palm, along the shrub line.

One about 3 days hatched and 1 that just emerged today.

3 day old Anole - not much bigger than the 2 day old.

When it sees me....

Still too young to understand Object permanence - or the anole version of the human is not there and gone forever.

And this little lizard is no bigger than a nickel. His body, that is - still has that long tail.

Seriously - this little lizard is super tiny. So adorable! Not as skittish as the older babies.

Note the residue still clinging to his body. The teeny tiny baby will lose the rest of the slough and be as smooth as the other ones.

As for the other babies around the house...

I'm now being watched.

I looked up and saw one of the baby birds watching me. He looks like he disapproves of me.

This is all of them. I climbed for this shot.

This is the proud daddy.

He fussed at me until I went back inside.

I love lizards. All animals really. Well, not too fond of some human animals.

I've got a soft spot for Anoles.

I wonder if the birds are going to eat the anoles? Circle of life and all that. They are all cute.

They also change color - tan/brown to green so they can hide better. I've seen Anoles missing a leg before - because of a bird.

Thanks, Laffy Kat.

Such great shots Solly! I saw this first on my phone and had to wait until I got to my computer to see them all. Aren't they awesome? You did a great job with these, so clear, beautiful but also entertaining. I love little Anoles. Thank you so much for these, they made my morning!

I adore Anoles too. Their faces are full of expression. I enjoy talking to them to see their reactions. If I'm perfectly still, they let me talk.

I kind of feel like they are already mine anyway.

I have anole houses for them and place water sources for them.

I try to attract them.

I smile whenever I see one. Anoles are very cool little lizards.

I wish we had more lizards in these parts - there are a few species of skinks but they are really uncommon; I've never seen one. It would be cool to have cute lizards in the garden but all I get is chipmunks, raccoons and the neighbors' cats rolling in the catnip.

We get skinks too. Maybe one or two a year and once one got into the house and lived in my storage pots on the craft table.

I caught him getting water from the dog's bowl one night. I had to evict him but I found his home and placed it outside with him.

Cats rolling in catnip are a delight to watch.

I live in a national forest - outside the tourist areas - so we get all kinds of animals.

Wild pigs and wild horses included.

It's an army post inside a national forest - not the larger part of the reserve but here and there along the borders.

I do wonder if the birds were watching you to scope out the location of some yummy anoles.

Some birds do eat lizards though.

Anoles are good little hiders and the small ones are very fast moving.

I try not to dwell on what is eating what outside.

Can be kind of discouraging.
