Memorial Day Photos

Last edited Sun May 26, 2019, 04:19 PM - Edit history (1)

If you would like, please post a photo in honor of Memorial Day.

Here are two shots I took this morning of the North Carolina Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the grounds of the State Capitol here in Raleigh. Each one of the branches of the armed services is recognized on the plaque. Christ Episcopal Church--across the street--is in the background.

I went out there one time when in DC because I wanted to pay respects to the final resting place of JFK.

When I lived in Los Angeles, I used to drive past what is now known as the Los Angeles National Cemetery on Wilshire at Sepulveda Boulevards all the time. When I lived there, we referred to it as the Veterans Cemetery in Westwood.

This is a shot of it--not my photo--but found on the internet

I was also moved by the national cemetery at Shiloh battlefield.

I had some photos taken there at dusk on a lovely summer evening about 15 years ago, but I can no longer find the external hard drive that they were stored on.☹️

The trip we took in 1986 driving to many Civil War battlefields was back in the film days. I lost all my photos prior to 2007 when our house burned down. I had some pretty good shots of many of them, including Gettysburg, Manassas, and Fredericksburg.

that is on the north side of the Capitol building.

The Memorial has a pillar for each branch of the military services--flying its flag above--and Lady Liberty at the top is holding a tobacco leaf!

Major engagements of each of the wars are listed on the bronze plaques on each of three sides dedicated to WW I, WW II, and the Korean War.

The inscription at the base of the center column reads

WW I

WW II

Korean War
