rather than just well lit, no shadows, portraiture. Why exclude animals? It's about creating a story or an emotional moment that connects the viewer to the subject.

My comment on how cute animals seem to get votes, independent of the quality of the photo. This contests has more than it's share of cute animals.
But it was made in jest, didn't mean for an actual exclusion.
