Wildlife pics at the zoo.

Zoos are a great place to shoot wildlife (duh!) and they are now refuges for rescues. Big cats are usually rescues from exotic pet homes (whoda' thought a 400 pound tiger would eat so much?) and elephants are often from circuses that are going out of business or donating them because of the bad press (Yay!).

You'll need a telephoto zoom for best results because it allows you to get up close and personal without climbing over the fence and you can crop out unwanted background. That's something cell phones can't do. Yet . . .

Modern zoos have great environments for the animals. Although not really authentic the background is at least not distracting,

Getting in close can yield interesting compositions and isolate the subject.

This was shot at a wildlife rehabilitation presentation and this fellow was sitting on a handler's gloved hand. A tight crop caught the fine detail and personality of the owl without all the distracting surroundings.

Zoos are fun and can offer really exciting opportunities in addition to all the great pics and memories of kids and grand kids having fun with you!

Note: Zoos retain all ownership of images made on their grounds so your pictures can't be sold or used commercially. Sharing for not for profit or personal use is not prohibited.

I honestly thought the bird pics were from your outdoor excursions, not from a zoo! Amazing.

Thanks for sharing!
