(10,642 posts)Been watching since the beginning. Otto and Charlotte are fun to watch. He has a great sense of humor and it's kinda sweet how she gets so attached to her cows.
One of my favorites!
I like the fact that hunting isn't about "look what I could kill", its about meat. All of them, mostly Otto and Charlotte, are part hillbilly and part hippie. Plus to be honest, I have a crush on Eve.
Do you know who Atz's daughter is?

I'll look for The Last Frontier. Thanks for the reviews.

(222 posts)4 generations. Otto and Charlotte raise cattle. Otto is a nutty (in a good way) guy. Otto's son Eivin and his wife Eve (with a newborn) have a huge garden, Eivin hunts and builds stuff. Atz is Otto's brother, he mostly rides among the cattle and tries to protect them from predators. Atz's son is Atz Lee, he mostly seems to hunt. His wife Jane is the best fisher in the family. There are somewhat graphic scenes of animals being killed, just to warn you. But like I said earlier, its not "woohoo I just killed the crap out of that".

(17,055 posts)I love Railroad Alaska on Destination America too. I watch them all actually, Alaska is so beautiful. I'll never get there in person so tv is the best I can do.

(6,594 posts)but I have been watching TLF and and like two more shows more or less just like it. I like Yukon Men a lot because a lot of the cast is either Native or part native and they just have the most pleasant accents.

(46,436 posts)but, you know, the Kilchers live right outside Homer and aren't "off the grid" at all. Atz and his ex-wife Nedra used to sing folk songs in Anchorage back in the '70s.
As for Buying Alaska or whatever it is, we met a guy in Nome last year from Homer who said the makers of that show approached him to "sell" his property for their series, even though he had no intention of doing so. It's all for show. Most of those places aren't really for sale.
We met the crew from Bering Sea Gold who actually are mining gold offshore from Nome, but the conflicts are all exaggerated for the camera.
Really, about the only one of those shows that's real is the Deadliest Catch.

(17,055 posts)I'm just teasing. I'm never going to get there so getting to see some of the beautiful scenery on some of those shows are as close as I'll ever get.
I'm even watching the new show Edge of Alaska. It's about McCarthy Alaska.

(46,436 posts)But I've never watched that show. It's really a beautiful location. Do they show much of the old copper mine or the glacier? There's a nice trail that runs right alongside the glacier for several miles that we hiked when we were up there. To get to McCarthy and the Kennicott mine, from Chitina you drive 65 miles or so on this dirt road that used to be where the railroad ran during the copper days. You have to be really careful because there are still railroad spikes that poke up periodically after rain or other erosion. People traveling back there are always warned to take a couple of spare tires just in case.
We read that the people of McCarthy were not too thrilled to have the intrusion of the TV show into their small community. You can read about it here

(222 posts)They use a lot of heavy machinery, which takes fuel. I've never seen them refining or mining. They're not off the grid.
I just like them as people.
