Making sense of competing ESA ballot measures coming in General Election
Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) program reform continues to be a key issue for Arizonans as election season ramps up across the state. If the major players have their way, voters will see two competing ballot measures concerning ESAs in November.
Save Our Schools, the nonpartisan public school advocacy group, has submitted an estimated 421,251 petition signatures in favor of its Protect Education Act measure, well over the required 255,949 to make the ballot.
The measure would regulate the Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) program in several ways, including requiring the return of all year-end unspent voucher money to the states public school fund instead of carrying forward, banning the use of voucher funds on non-educational expenses, and instating a $150,000 household income cap for eligibility.
We are so grateful to the thousands of enthusiastic volunteers, including ESA voucher recipient families themselves, for committing thousands of hours to the Protect Education campaign over the last few months, said Olivia Fierro, a campaign spokesperson.
