Sen. John McCain returning to Arizona to start cancer treatment on Monday

After casting a dramatic vote that derailed the immediate Republican prospects of repealing the Affordable Care Act, Sen. John McCain announced Friday that he is returning to Arizona to start his treatment for an aggressive form of brain cancer.

"In accordance with the guidance of his physicians, Senator McCain is returning to Arizona to undergo further treatment at Mayo Clinic," McCain's Senate office said in a written statement. "On Monday, July 31, he will begin a standard post-surgical regimen of targeted radiation and chemotherapy. During that time, Senator McCain will maintain a work schedule. He plans to return to Washington at the conclusion of the August recess.”

McCain underwent a craniotomy July 14 to remove a blood clot, which later was revealed to be associated with a deadly brain tumor known as a glioblastoma‎.

McCain's announcement is the first public statement that details what treatment he is pursuing, although he previously signaled in conversations with fellow senators that it involved chemotherapy.
