Position Description

Title: Biological Science Technician
Reports to: Director of Restoration
Status: Full-Time Regular Employee
Duration: 1 year with the possibility of extension
Position Summary:
The Biological Science Technician (BST) provides field and project administration support for GWP and BLM ecological restoration, nursery, and fisheries staff. The BST will work both independently and under the direct supervision of GWP and BLM staff.
Duties & Responsibilities Include:
Assist Director of Restoration with planning and implementation of restoration projects
Assist with removal of invasive plant species by chemical and mechanical means
Conducting Vegetation Monitoring and Surveys
Maintaining and monitoring Piezometers
Using GIS, GPS, and tablets to maintain records and databases
Coordinate water quality monitoring efforts
Assisting with the instillation of rock check structures.
Assist BLM in monitoring fish populations in local streams
Assisting with non-native fish removal
Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
Enrolled in or completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Natural Resources, or related field is required; or equivalent experience
Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to interact with a wide variety of constituents are required
General computer skills are required, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite
Ability to pass a basic security clearance is required
Willingness to work in a variety of conditions, including streams, high heat, and dense riparian habitat, is required
A valid state driver’s license is required, and 4-wheel driving skills are highly desirable
1-2 years of natural resources field experience is highly desirable
GPS/GIS and database management skills are highly desirable

Work Environment
Moderate to high physical effort is required
Willing to work weekends and holidays as needed
Assignments involve substantial outdoor work and seasonal extreme temperatures
Safe use of hand tools, herbicide application equipment, power tools, and heavy machinery is required
Necessary safety equipment and risk management training will be provided
A valid state driver’s license will be required, and experience driving 4-wheel drive and trailers is preferred

Compensation:
$12-$14/hour depending on experience

Is GWP a public agency or private consultant?

A degree in biology/resource management doesn't get oneself very far, it appears. Completely bass ackward, IMO.

2. it IS a tech position, but yeah pretty low wage.

Assuming they would reside in the Safford area cost of living is a bit less, at least for housing.

I might have a fair idea of what that job might be like and the fact that it's a non-profit changes my perspective a bit. It could be a good opportunity for a new/future grad to get some tech time under their belt, while working for a worthy cause.

I have to say though, my first thought was getting regularly chased out of a creek bed or irrigation box by a rattlesnake isn't my idea of fun. Especially, if it was for a private firm's bottom line.

but in addition to the benefits you mentioned - lots of networking too - dealing with a good variety of people and entities.
