Arizona projected to gain seat in U.S. House

It’s beginning to look like Arizona’s going to have a bit more congressional clout after 2022.

A new analysis by Election Data Services concludes that the shifts in population from the Northeast to the South and West pretty much guarantee that Arizona is going to pick up a 10th seat in the U.S. House after the decennial census. The organization’s Kimball Brace said that’s because Arizona is adding residents at a rate faster than much of the rest of the country.

Political consultant Chuck Coughlin points out that the most rapid growth in Arizona is occurring in Maricopa County. He said that makes it likely that any new district created likely would be carved, at least in part, out of districts already in the county.

Seven of the nine existing districts touch on populated areas of Maricopa County, with five of these wholly within the county.

When the energy sector is doing well it creates a lot of blue collar work. I live in a rural area and I think that about 30% of the jobs I see in the newspaper are for commercial truck drivers and another 10% for local delivery drivers. Most of the jobs do not require any type of degree and pay pretty well.

The other factor is that the birth rate in Texas probably higher than elsewhere. It does appear that the teen pregnancy rate is declining which is a blessing.

When Grumman tried to attract engineers and workers to Long Island, they couldn't get enough people to move here, so they closed the operation and moved everything down south. Exxon has been moving research facilities down south, from NJ, too.

Housing was the big killer-- depending on whom you believe, median house price here is between $375,000 and $450,000. That doesn't get you much, and then you have to pay some of the highest RE and school taxes. And heat the place.
