More Californians painting their brown lawns green

Not The Onion!!

http://blog.sfgate.com/stew/2015/05/14/more-californians-painting-their-dry-lawns-green/

The Urban Farmer irrigation stores around the Bay Area now have displays of an intriguing product at the front of their stores: a lawn paint that will turn your brown parched lawn a beautiful shade of golf course green.

Assistant Manager Cat Gratz says Urban Farmer started carrying Lawn Lift last year because the San Francisco Public Works department was interested in experimenting with painting the grass on street medians. In light of the drought and mandatory water restrictions, the stores are now marketing it to homeowners....

At the Richmond store, Sales and Design Associate Eric Titus says at least four times as many people are asking about the product compared to last year. “People laugh at it and then when we tell them a lot of people are using it, they’re interested.”

After four consecutive years of below-normal rainfall, the slogan in California these days is “Brown is the new green.” In other words, it’s cool to stop watering your lawn and let it turn brown. But for those people who just can’t give up on the green, spray paint is becoming a desirable option. Paint brands include Get It Green, Green Out and Grass Greenzit. In California, Lawn Lift is especially popular because it was started by a Golden State local. According to a recent story in the Los Angeles Times, 45-year-old Jim Power launched Lawn Lift after his mortgage business imploded in 2007. “Now he is a leading purveyor of lawn paint for homeowners, hoteliers, wedding planners and others who won’t give up their natural lawns, but can’t bear the look of drought-stricken grass,” the Times reports.

artificial grass. No watering and no mowing and I'm told it lasts 30 years.

I have a small back yard, that I'm thinking of laying stepping stones and making a patio out of it. I'll plant creeping thyme or other drought tolerant ground covers between the stones. It will be okay for an old lady to sit at and watch the birds at the feeder, but for someone with a family, who wants to play on the grass, I don't know what kind of solution works for them.

The paint is nontoxic and it's made from plants, and it lasts 3 months.
