Related: About this forumKevin McCarthy Expected to Lead the House
Unlike Nancy Pelosi, the San Francisco Democrat who held the Speakers job until 2011 and was aligned with leaders in Sacramento, McCarthys political agenda runs counter to much of what the Brown administration is trying to achieve, and he has not been shy about using his power in Washington to try to roll back some of the states landmark liberal policies.
McCarthy opposes Californias aggressive climate-change rules. He wants to jettison the high-speed rail project. He is pushing to divert more of the states scarce water to parched growers, despite loud protest from the Brown administration that such a move could irreparably damage the fragile ecosystems that are the backbone of Californias water system. (17,064 posts)McCarthy isn't a shoe-in. I think the Speakers chair is a wide open contest, and it's very possible the winner is somebody unknown and unmentioned by the media.

(4,458 posts)that this may be true......what makes us believe, at this juncture, that there are Any boundaries at all in the Evangelical ConServ Extremist World?
And if they go after McConnell (as rumors indicate a strong possibility this is already underway) ....are we witnessing the final stages of a govt coup?

(75,480 posts)He used to be my Congressman in gerrymandered California and no one ever ran against him except maybe a couple of times from candidates who had no chance of winning in even a blue gerrymandered district. So he's waltzed in unopposed in any elections. He was the anointed "heir" of Congressman Bill Thomas, a hateful and corrupt politician who once headed the Ways and Means committee. A little googling will get you to his abysmal and corrupt record. But back to Kevin. He has only two accomplishments on his record, according to Rachel Maddow, yet he rose to the third most powerful position in the Republican caucus in very little time and now will be speaker. Instead of a gavel, they should present him with a crown because only princes have gained that kind of position and power in the same way.

(78,249 posts)Um, why doesn't someone push to divert more of the states scarce water from unparched growers to parched growers?? Exhibit A: The water district that serves two counties and controls one-third of the entire Sacramento River flow, based on water rights that date back to the 19th century!!

Not surprisingly, these are the two counties that grow most of our rice. Rice is among the thirstiest of crops.

(51,550 posts)The only thing more insane than growing rice in the desert is how they got the water rights that gave them these sweet water rates:
So, because some dude nailed a piece of paper to a tree in 1883, huge agribusinesses, who now hold Will Green's old water right, get water at a tiny fraction of the cost that the rest of us pay.

Hes hearing from members angry that the GOP Congress has not advanced the conservative cause more forcefully, and hes responding with a clear message: He is willing to take a more confrontational stand with the White House and the Senate to achieve the results the party has sought to enact. here
