Crews on Monday started dismantling a "larger than typical" homeless encampment sandwiched between Interstate 880, Highway 87 and the Rosemary Gardens neighborhood, officials said.
The cleanup, which is expected to take three to five days, was spurred by health and safety concerns, according to Ray Bramson, a division manager for the city's housing department.
"We do see encampments like this on occasion," he said. "We try and make sure we're responding to them, because we know the larger an encampment, the more impact it's going to have on the surrounding community."...
"Encampments are just a symptom of the larger crisis that we're facing, which is homelessness, and we're doing everything we can to help people move into housing and get stable and safe," he said.
