A three-story-tall sculpture of a female silhouette called "Truth Is Beauty" first appeared at Burning Man in 2013.
Now, this graceful figure is being raised at San Leandro's new Tech Campus, with her feet and calves taking shape this week.
But while people on the playa were delighted by this 13,000-pound nude, residents of the East Bay city have mixed feelings about her.
The majority see her as a beautiful addition to the community. "I didn't think of it as offensive in any way, because it's just a woman posing who happens to be naked," Bay Area resident Breana Lankford, who approves of the statue, told KPIX-TV. "And it's pretty see through, so it's not like there's going to be any explicit details."

(24,780 posts)When some people don't care to see it? Yes it's beautiful. But some don't care to see it but are forced to by someone who gets to decide what's beautiful when beauty is in the eye of the beholder and therefore no more than an opinion.

(267 posts)It seems like a tasteful sculpture of a ballet pose or something like that. The warning lends a sordid air to the story.

(112,204 posts)I've found out recently that people will alert on virtually anything and while my appeal was successful I decided not to take any chances. By including it in the title there can be no doubt that I attempted to comply with the rules set out by the administrators.

(267 posts)I was going to write that the graphic warning was infantilist and condescending-because that's the truth- but then toned it back a bit since it was so absurd i figured there had to be a reason.
A board as big as DU will have its share of busybodies & snowflakes. Folks like that usually mature out of it at some point. Of course, for most ppl that point is some time in high school.
I've enjoyed the news items you posted over in the Georgia board. Pretty good curation. Keep posting news items there if you are so inclined.

(112,204 posts)It takes me anywhere from 6-10 days to make a complete sweep of the country depending on my personal life and how busy the news cycle is across the country. I also am a bit motivated since one my sisters lives north of Atlanta.
By the way, I will occasionally post some threads that might be considered weird or absurd. I'm not doing it to be insensitive or offend, but because I have a quirky sense of humor and I know that some other members are "off-beat" so they might get a laugh too.
