Fresno student pelted with juice boxes and called gay slurs at school on her Sweet 16

Logann Pruneda, a student at Bullard High, says she was pelted with full juice boxes at school on Monday for being gay. It was her 16th birthday.

The Fresno Unified sophomore said that after a fire drill outside the school, she was hit with three boxes of apple juice from behind, leaving abrasions on her neck and back.

She heard a male call her “a faggot, a queer, a lesbo” during the attack, but did not see who did it, and did not recognize the voice.

“They were pretty hard throws,” she said. “All I heard was them calling me really mean names that involved my sexuality.”

Horrible but not surprising. Fresno is basically a mini red state. nt SunSeeker Oct 2017 #1

I don't know anyone my age who thinks about it in the least - this is just awful!

in many ways. Intolerance and prejudice permeates its city leaders and many of its citizens.

But then I'm in New York, another reliably "blue" state - and it is, but mainly because of the population centers downstate and in The City. I live upstate, in the Northeast, and it's also Republican country around here. I don't personally know anyone who supports Trump, I saw exactly two Trump bumper stickers during the campaign. But then I went to visit a friend of mine who lives several miles north, it's a small rural area near the lakes and Adirondacks, gets a lot of tourists in the summer but it's rather isolated with a small population during the rest of the year. And I was shocked to my core to see all the Trump lawn signs! I got hopelessly lost and I drove around until I had cell coverage to phone my friend - I just couldn't bring myself to stop and ask for directions...

there's islands of ignorance and hate. Fresno has been like this as long as I've lived here, and I've been here off and on for over 50 years. Its a bit better than it was in the 60s but not not by much. Especially in its older citizens.

Fresno government pretends that we are a progressive city but there's a long way to go.

Local elections are usually decided during the Republican primaries, though it's odd, the nearest small city to me always elects a Democratic mayor - as does the small city just south of here where I grew up. And though we have Democratic senators, we had a Republican congressman for as long as I can remember, there were numerous times that the Democrats didn't even bother to field a candidate. We had a terrific breakthrough when Kirsten Gillibrand ran - and won - in 2006, and her chosen successor (a really great guy whose campaigns I worked on) held onto the seat for exactly a term and a half. Unfortunately, we now are stuck with a Ryan-acolyte Trump-supporting Rep, but she is extremely unpopular, is met with protests wherever she turns up, and so far seven Democrats have stepped up to run against her - so there is hope!

on thier own. One of my teens heard a classmate talking about how she hated her mom for going to a coworkers "queer wedding "and how sick gay people make her and why did her mom think it was ok . My teens concern was for gay students in the class hearing this
He and I recognized it predominantly comes from the home and pulpits but sometimes hate just seems attractive regardless of upbringing .
Look at the white supremacist guy who just killed his dad because his dad was calling him a Nazi and wanted him out of the house
