Mayor Garcetti announces water and power will be shut off for nonessential L.A. businesses that don’t close

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti opened his daily briefing Tuesday recognizing what may have been the first teenage COVID-19 death in L.A. County and went on to announce actions against nonessential businesses that don't close and a new portal for recruiting medics.

He reminded young people that the virus can hit them too, urging them to stay at home and practice social distancing.

"Your behavior can save a life and take a life," Garcetti said. "And that life could be yours.”

The mayor addressed President Trump's remarks from earlier Tuesday about having the nation "opened up and just raring to go by Easter." Garcetti said he didn't think L.A. would be back to normal "in that short time."

I used to work at a power utility. Years ago, we replaced all of the old mechanical meters with digital ones. In high-traffic places like apartments we put in meters that can be turned off and on remotely. No person has to visit to pull the meter like in olden days. If they have these types of meters in businesses in LA, it's pretty easy to shut off the power. If not, the utility workers won't mind the overtime.

In my neighborhood, the guy pulls up in his car, takes a couple of tools out of his trunk and, as they say in France, "Viola."

No more water.

Water utility is outside my area of expertise. I know the same kind of functionality is available in those meters. I just don't know if those have been mass-deployed like the power meters have.

So you want to completely turn off fire sprinkler systems, alarm systems, refrigeration, a/c, heat, security lights, etc in entire areas of the city?

Are you insane?

It would seem so.

They are only threatening to turn off businesses that are non essential and refuse to follow orders to close.

Don't want your power and water turned off? Simple - follow orders and close your business if told to do so.
