CA Unemployment Insurance comes through again

Last edited Thu May 21, 2020, 01:13 PM - Edit history (1)

It’s great to live in a liberal state.

A few weeks ago, I applied for CA UI as an independent contractor based on 1099s of earnings for 2019. That application was approved in four days and I had $ deposited in my bank account within 7 days. Amazing!

At the time, CA EDD said that everyone applying as a gig worker/1099/indie would get an initial weekly benefit of $167, supplemented by the $600-per-week the Feds were offering, and that that $167 would be adjusted down the road once EDD had time to look at an individual’s earnings info, with the possibility of that $167 being increased.

Well, today I was informed by email that my weekly CA benefit had increased by $47, with that increase retroactive to 4 weeks ago. Which means an additional $168 was deposited into my account, with my weekly benefit raised from $167 to $214 a week (before taxes - I’m netting $42 from the $47 increase).

I’m sorry that other states can’t seem to or don’t want to help their residents the way CA does.

Feeling fortunate.

budget cuts. Newsom has already warned us about his in his daily updates.

This is why this election is so critical that the Democrats control the WH and both Houses of Congress

If the $3-trillion package doesn’t go through, I have no doubt CA will be better equipped to handle things than the states that are currently falling on their faces with UI benefits.
