CA's vaccination plan reserves nearly half the state's supply for 8 million lowest income residents
Californias new coronavirus vaccination plan reserves nearly half the states supply for 8 million of the states lowest-income residents.
Large swaths of the Central Valley and Southern California are on the list. Los Angeles County has the most ZIP codes that will be prioritized, with 79 listed.
Officials said the plan is designed to address inequities, with white and Asian residents currently receiving vaccinations at higher rates than Black and Latino residents. By targeting the areas most affected by the pandemic, officials say the new plan will help slow the spread of COVID-19 and could speed the reopening of the states economy.
Those given priority in the new system live in ZIP codes based on the lowest quartile of the states Healthy Places Index, which measures socioeconomic opportunity. While the areas are not defined formally by race and ethnicity, they take into account income, education level, housing and health care access, which collectively align closely with race and ethnicity.
