California governor candidates to talk 'key issues' at Tuesday debate

Another debate in California’s governor’s race is set for Tuesday, April 28, coming nearly a week after leading gubernatorial candidates addressed homelessness and California’s gas tax in a different debate.

Californians will soon have their ballots to vote in the primary election in June, a key opportunity for voters to decide which two candidates for the governor’s race will move on to the election in November.

The debate will be held at Pomona College’s Bridges Auditorium in Claremont, and it’s in partnership with CBS News California, the Asian Pacific American Public Affairs and Pomona College.

Here’s what you need to know about it.

The debate was divided into three, 30-minute segments, each with different moderator. The moderator in the second segment did a great job of handling the candidates and was strong in keeping them in line. She should handle the presidential debates.

I immediately eliminated Hilton and Bianco. Hilton was a talking head on Fox News and we've seen how other Fox News talking heads now in the current administration are incompetent. We don't need an incompetent talking head as governor. Bianco seized the ballots from the 2025 election.

For the Democrats in the race, I was least impressed with Mahan, Thurmond, and Villaraigosa. Of the remaining three Democrats, I think both Steyer and Becerra came out ahead. I like Porter and the way she handled herself in the Congress during hearings but I don't think that image will work as governor.
If I had to choose, I'd go with Steyer, although, his problem is he really doesn't understand, IMO, the limits of power the governor has.
