Lakewood to hold special election April 7
Lakewood voters will soon have the chance to weigh in on the future of the city, as an upcoming special election will give them the chance to vote on whether to keep Lakewoods latest updates to the towns zoning code.
On April 7, Lakewood will hold a special election, conducted by mail ballots only. The ballots will have four questions, each asking if voters want to repeal an ordinance amending the citys zoning code. All four ordinances were passed together on Oct. 13, 2025, to update the citys zoning code.
On Jan. 26, Lakewood City Council called for the special election as a result of the referendum process. Referendums are petitions circulated to gather signatures to place an item on the ballot for voters to decide, meaning that voters are being asked to decide on city laws that Lakewood City Council has already approved. For this election, four referendums were circulated, resulting in four ballot questions, because four interconnected ordinances were passed related to Lakewoods zoning.
For each ballot question, a yes vote means repealing the ordinance passed by Lakewood City Council in October, while a no vote means keeping the ordinance in place. The first three ballot questions refer to ordinances that change pieces of the written zoning code, while the fourth ballot question asks voters to weigh in on the zoning map that was approved by council.
