Hello everyone,
I moved to Connecticut on Sunday on a split decision. I kind of dropped everything back in Kansas City to move out here and start a new adventure. I just turned 34 on Monday so I decided it was time to change things up a bit. SO, I thought I would reach out here on DU and see if anyone knew of any a. job opportunities and b.volunteer opportunities. I am in the Torrington area and would like to get out and meet some people and get involved (especially in maybe some political groups). I have experience in higher education, marketing and web design if that helps. Thanks so much!
And if anyone here on DU in the area would like to have a coffee or a pint I would love to see some of the friendly faces that I see on here everyday!
Much love,

Any reason in particular you picked that part of CT? Jobs are easier had in the Stamford area. Or NYC better still. I live in Westchester, about 20 miles north of NYC and I commuted into the City for years for work.
Welcome to the Northeast and congrats on your fresh start. I love New beginnings!

(979 posts)I actually moved here because of my partner. She has a job that she cannot leave here at the moment, but we wanted to live together so it only made sense that I move. And honestly, I was over Kansas City anyway so I figured it might as well be me. Plus, having visited here not too long ago, I realized that it is quite lovely out here and that it is my kind of place.
I do not mind commuting a little bit, I'd be willing to do an hour each way. I'm thinking Hartford might be the best place to start looking. But honestly, I'm willing to do anything for the time being.
And that is awesome that your dad is moving out this way! Also, sorry about your uncle. Lol We all have them in our family.

(5,141 posts)It really is amazingly beautiful in that part of the country, and in fact the reason my uncle moved there to begin with is because my dad and I stumbled into the area one day after our usual trip to the Elephants Trunk flea market. We just decided to drive around, stopped in that area and both thought WOW; my uncle moved to Michigan to be with his second wife but hated it and wanted to move back East so my dad suggested he look there.
I will certainly let you know if anything comes up. I have some friends up Hartford way and Id be happy to poke them.

(979 posts)I really appreciate it. I know a few people up here, but not in this area. It is always nice to meet people and get a helping hand in a new place!

(34,195 posts)I lived in Hartford 1969 - 1970 and loved it. Go see the Mark Twain House in Hartford, and do some small country fairs.
CT is beautiful this time of year with the Fall foliage.
Winter is beautiful too, but a big factor in our moving to San Diego.
(I now live in N.M.)

(979 posts)I look forward to doing all of the fall things I possibly can. I will tell you I am dreading winter though lol. I thought KC was bad, not I'm about to experience what cold really is haha.

(979 posts)is that KC has a higher elevation than Torrington! I really thought I was much higher here.

(16,336 posts)We go from Appalachian mountains to the sea in a relatively short drive with significant upland. The great plains have hills and relief, but you never realize that you are on a giant plateau already well elevated.

(979 posts)we went hiking at Greyrock and as soon as my ears started pooping on my way up I realized how low we were before lol.

(56,841 posts)we've had some tough winters the past few years, too.
NewJeffCT
(56,841 posts)but, I believe that has already passed - it's out that way, though. I have a friend that moved to Texas about 10 years ago, but he still tries to make it back up for the Goshen Fair every year.
well hopefully I can make it next year. But I have already heard of several town/county fairs coming up that should be a lot of fun.

(16,336 posts)That area is really a nice part of the state. I think you'll like it here.

(56,841 posts)has a pretty good reputation for a local/regional theater.

(979 posts)We went for a drive and went by there. I guess they get some pretty good performers/performances that come through from time to time.

(56,841 posts)I'm over to the east of you in the Farmington River Valley.
for higher education, you'd need to look up what's in your area - Bristol has a community college and isn't far. Beyond that, you have CCSU, the University of Hartford, St. Joseph's College, the Univ of Conn law school & school of Social Work, Trinity College and a few others that I'm probably missing.
I will definitely check them out. I looked for jobs at the UConn Torrington Campus today, but it looks like they are not hiring at the moment. But those all sound like great options! Thanks!

Enjoy the state. It's beautiful, but very, very expensive.

(979 posts)I went down to New Haven just the other weekend and I loved it. In fact, I have loved everything so far but those darned prices.
