D.C. area could hit 70 in January for first time in four years Friday

Such warm days in winter are becoming more common because of human-caused climate change

On the heels of Washington’s most wintry week in years and 6 to 10 inches of snow, temperatures are set to soar to at least 60 Thursday and potentially around 70 Friday.

Temperatures this warm are more typical of what one would expect in Orlando at this time of year and not common in the D.C. area until April.

Average highs at this time of year are in the mid-40s, so Friday’s highs near 70 are projected to be about 25 degrees above the norm and the most anomalously warm in the contiguous United States.

If the District hits 70 on Friday, it will be the first such instance in four years during January. The last 70-degree days in January occurred in 2020 when it was 72 on Jan. 11 and 70 on Jan. 12.
