D.C. sues DoorDash for allegedly pocketing millions in food-delivery workers’ tips

Following an eight-month investigation by his office, D.C. Attorney General Karl A. Racine filed a lawsuit Tuesday against DoorDash, accusing America’s largest food-delivery service of pocketing millions of dollars in workers’ tips and using them to cover labor costs.

The attorney general’s office argues that DoorDash’s former pay model — the San Francisco-based company announced in August that it would revamp the model — violated several sections of the Consumer Protection Procedures Act, said Benjamin Wiseman, director of the Office of Consumer Protection in the attorney general’s office. Among other alleged deceptive-trade violations, Wiseman said that DoorDash misrepresented to consumers how the company would use tips.
