I hope the Orlando Sentinel succeeds in keeping the County Expressway Authority free of political

appointments.

Orlando's toll-road building agency is expected to cull its list of potential chief executives down to three this afternoon.

More than three dozen people seek to replace to Max Crumit, who quit six weeks ago after losing a vote of confidence from the board of the Orlando Orange County Expressway Authority.

A four-member committee that includes authority Chairman Walter Ketcham and director Scott Batterson will meet 4 p.m. at the agency's headquarters to pore over the resumes and pick three potential successors to Crumit.

The problem for the agency is that only three applicants appear to meet the qualifications set for the job. And that does not include the presumed favorite, state Rep. Steve Precourt, R-Orlando, a civil engineer who still has a stake in a firm that has been paid $10 million by the agency for consulting work since 2004.
