The filing deadline in Florida has passed and Democrats are banking on a potentially attractive candidate, but an even more unconventional process, to take another shot at the 13th District.
Democrats recruited Colonel Ed Jany to run in the seat now being held by Republican Rep. David Jolly after the high profile special election earlier this spring.
But Jany just registered as a Democrat last fall. And because of the Charlie Crist Rule, as one party strategist called it, or Sore Loser Law, a candidate must be registered with a party a year before filing for office from that same party. Since Jany falls short of that requirement, he must run as a Non-Party Affiliated (NPA) candidate in the general election.
According to the initial release, Colonel Jany is running as an NPA candidate, with the support of the Democratic Party, as a result of a restrictive and partisan law passed by Floridas Republican controlled legislature.
Thats why it was critical that Rev. Manuel Sykes (or any other Democrat) not get into the race, because then there would be an official Democratic nominee that could divide the general election vote with Jany.

I don't know much about Colonel Jany but he has to be a better candidate than Alex Sink.

(88,117 posts)I have mixed feelings about this pushing a candidate out of the race to avoid primaries.

(17,064 posts)Per today's Tampa Bay Times, his degree is from a diploma mill, and the degree he claims from U of Minnesota isn't true. Looks like Turd Way DCCC and Fl Dem Party stepped in a pile of shit again.

(17,064 posts)per today's Tampa Bay Times. Day after the times questioned his academic claims on his resume. Filing deadline has already passed... good job Dems <sarcasm> I'll again remind readers that County, State, and National Party officials chased out a Democratic candidate in order to clear the way for Jany... who had no political experience, didn't live in the district, and had switched from Republican to Democrat too late to actually be on the ticket as a Dem, and was running as No Party Affiliation. Way to fucking go! What a collossall fuck-up. This is a competitive district a Democrat can win (Obama won twice). Party leaders first chased away a candidate so Alex Sink could run w/o a primary challenger in the special election last fall (this is Bill Young's former district), then totally screwed up so now there's no Dem candidate at all, not even an ex-repuke fake one. When I tell you the Dem Party in Florida is fucked up beyond all hope, this is the kind of shit I'm talking about.
