Largest mall in the nation proposed for Miami

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/national/article12939824.html

The company that owns and runs the largest mall in America wants to build an even bigger one in northwestern Miami-Dade County in Florida, a roughly 200-acre entertainment complex with submarines, a Legoland, sea lions and an artificial ski slope.

Backed by the owner of Minnesota’s Mall of America, American Dream Miami is proposed for land at the intersection of Florida’s Turnpike and Interstate 75 near Miami Lakes. It’s projected to cost as much as $4 billion to build and employ 25,000 people once opened, more than enough to give it Miami-Dade’s largest private-sector payroll.

It also would bring the largest mall in the United States to what’s now pastureland in Miami’s congested suburbs, using vacant real estate flanked by two of the region’s busiest highways.

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez revealed the deal Thursday in an interview, and said the venture promises to provide a historic boost to the county’s economy. Mall of America owner Triple Five is not asking for government dollars or free land, Gimenez said, but wants to create the kind of large-scale theme park that can attract visitors from around the world and sustain thousands of jobs across Miami-Dade.

Denial goes a long way.

You don’t have to look 85 years into the future to see what a sinking world looks like — you only need to look as far as Miami.

Climate scientists have been warning the world about sea-level rise for years, pleading with governments to cut back on carbon lest all our coastal cities go the way of Venice. In 2014, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released its fifth Assessment Report, predicting that oceans would rise more than three feet by 2100. Those projections make for some alarming visions of the future — cities water-logged, monuments submerged, islands created.

But the flooding is already happening in Florida. At the University of Miami’s Department of Atmospheric Sciences, Brian McNoldy and other researchers have been accumulating sea-level data from Virginia Key (a small island just south of Miami Beach) since 1996. Over those 19 years, sea levels around the Miami coast have already gone up 3.7 inches. In a post updated Monday, McNoldy highlights three big problems that follow from those numbers — and they should worry all of us.

Maybe it's a make-work job stimulus? Or there's tons of public tax exemptions?

The Florida Turnpike and I75 are already one of our permanent parking lots. Since stupid Scott vetoed the high speed train, there's no hope in sight.

My theory is that we need to move into Cuba because all of Florida will soon be paved over.

I don't know how long before we become Miami here, but it is much much better ( well except the Atractions areas)

I could never live down there again.

I'm in Clearwater - so I just stay away from the beach during spring break. Otherwise, it's OK.

But Miami doesn't really have that many options. It's pact busy everywhere. The density of population is much higher than in Orlando. I really don't understand why are they even contemplating a mall within the city limits. Maybe somewhere else, like in Palm Beach/Jupiter area.

I still have my family there, and drive back every couple weeks. Last week it took me 5 hours to make it to Sunny Issles. I can only assume after the mall it will get lots worse.

Its already a stand still on I 95 and 163 st. If they build that mall, they better think of expanding the roads and overpasses.

They should plant trees instead if more malls. There are so many already. People need oxygen and greenery, not more concrete giants.

Ugh..

This name makes me sick!

Yes, the American Dream consists of gorging oneself on 'retail therapy' and a slice of Sbarro in the Food Court.

I need a shower...
