Battle to succeed Alan Grayson heats up

When Alan Grayson decided to give up his congressional seat to run for the Senate, he left a vacuum behind in Florida's District 9 that four Democrats and two Republicans are trying to fill.

The Democratic candidates in the Aug. 30 primary include Grayson's former district manager, Susannah Randolph. She would have been the hopeful with the closest connection to Grayson — if not for candidate Dr. Dena Grayson, his wife of about three months.

There's also Darren Soto, a Hispanic state senator running for a seat in a district drawn to help give Hispanics representation in Congress.

And there's Valleri Crabtree, a former Osceola Democratic chair running as a moderate "purple" Democrat who hopes to reach out to Republicans.
