Broward school administrator used district resources for affair
A Broward County school administrator could lose his job after an investigation concluded he misused his position to carry on an extramarital affair.
The investigation centered around Israel Canales, 54, a manager of administrative support for the district, where he has overseen the operations of the K.C. Wright administrative headquarters in Fort Lauderdale. He also frequently drove Superintendent Robert Runcie to events throughout the region.
The district's Professional Standards Committee recommended Canales be fired after the investigation accused him of using a district credit card to reserve a hotel room for a romantic relationship with Cristy Cofer, 38, a school district community liaison who works with families in the juvenile justice system. The hotel charge was reimbursed before the investigation began.
He also without authorization allowed Cofer to work inside his office, using a conference table, and gave her a prime parking space that she wasn't entitled to, the report alleges.
