John Morgan wants $15 minimum wage on ballot, but new restrictions could thwart effort
TALLAHASSEE Orlando attorney John Morgan got a boost from two polls showing Floridians back his effort to increase the minimum wage, but its unclear whether theyll get the chance to vote on it as new restrictions for ballot measures take effect next month.
A survey of 3,095 likely voters from St. Pete Polls released Wednesday showed more than 63 percent favored Morgans proposed 2020 amendment, which would increase the minimum wage currently at $8.46 to $10 per hour, and increase it by $1 every year until it hits $15 in 2026.
Another poll from Quinnipiac showed positive, but more complex figures. Seventy-six percent of respondents want to hike the minimum wage. But just 36 percent want to increase it to $15, and 43 percent want to increase it, but not that high. Nine percent wanted to go higher, and another nine percent wanted to leave it as is.
Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a new bill (HB 5) into law on June 7, which imposes restrictions on people gathering petitions for ballot measures, but those provisions dont take effect until July 7.
