Democrats fear Trump, Republicans are making inroads with Hispanic voters in Florida
BY DAVID SMILEY
June 20
The states 2.2 million Hispanic voters make up an outsized portion of Floridas electorate, and nearly two-thirds voted in 2016 for Hillary Clinton. Last year, Trumps hard-line immigration policies and rhetoric contributed to sweeping Republican losses around the country as strong Hispanic turnout helped Democrats take the House of Representatives.
But the belief in demographic destiny is dead among Florida Democrats, crushed in November by victorious Trump-backed candidates who more than reversed his 2016 losses among Sunshine State Hispanics. In races decided by the thinnest of margins, Floridas Hispanic voters swung back to the right just enough to deliver wins to two of Trumps top allies, keeping the governorship in conservative hands and turning over a Democratic U.S. Senate seat to the Republicans.
So as the top 20 Democratic presidential candidates descend upon Miami ahead of next weeks primary debates, their ability to communicate with South Floridas massive Hispanic population will be front and center. Because among Floridas fastest growing voting bloc, Trump merely needs to lose by less in order to once again take Floridas 29 electoral college votes in 2020.

I found this article interesting not only because it is, but also because I was personally exposed to this republican Hispanic grass roots pitch for Puerto Rico statehood in a local community meeting. I find the fact, that republican Hispanics are trying to sell Rick Scott, Marco Rubio, et al, as promoters of equal rights and state hood for Puerto Rico, or as defenders of Hispanics in general ludicrous. But they're working it. John Nichols had an article up on the Puerto Rico statehood subject as well at the Nation just recently.

(3,299 posts)These specifically were the hot button points, I noticed at the meetings made by Hispanics, and I thought well that's peculiar. Then I get home and see this article and I see the same issues. The "freedom fighters," whether they be Cuban immigrants, Puerto Rican citizens, or Venezuelan immigrants, find it necessary to rail about "socialism," and respond to patronizing comments from Republicans about their military service, their patriotism or the cause back home.
I'm not an expert but I've lived in Florida a long time, and this is my subjective perception. Based on that experience I would think your comment about Cuban immigrants is accurate. I've noticed a perspective among some in the Cuban community that I don't particularly appreciate concerning other immigrants. I'm not familiar enough with Hispanic communities generally to know about the others.

Courting the Hispanic vote is a smoke screen to make it all look like a legitimate election.
There is no match for the vile sneaky corruption of rick Scott. Trump is open about his criminal acts. Rick Scott silently destroys everything he touches without leaving a fingerprint or dna.
And he has every intention of being president in 2024.
