Statesboro sets Nov. 3 special election for vacant District 2 city council seat

Statesboro voters in District 2 will head to the polls November 3, 2026, to choose a new city councilmember after the resignation of former Councilmember Paulette Chavers.

Statesboro City Council approved Resolution 2026-22 during its June 2 meeting, formally calling for a special election to fill the unexpired term of the vacant District 2 seat. The resolution also sets the candidate qualifying fee, qualifying period and voter registration deadline for the special election.

Chavers resigned from council during the May 19 regular meeting, and council declared the District 2 seat vacant effective that same day. The city charter requires a special election when a council vacancy occurs for a reason other than the expiration of the term.

The special election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, with voting from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
